Eating for the open
The secret to doing well in the open doesn’t come in a bottle of pre-workout, energy drink, or supplement. The secret to do doing well in the open is not really a secret at all–it is about eating real food.
What you eat during the weeks of the open should not differ from your regular good nutrition. Fill up your plate with vegetables, healthy fats, non-starchy carbohydrates, and protein. These foods contain the appropriate balance of nutrients to keep you fueled through your workouts.
Meal prepping is even more crucial during the open weeks. You do not want to give yourself the opportunity to make a bad decision that can negatively impact your performance.
Directly around your workouts, you want to find what works for you. You need a balanced snack that contain quick carbohydrates and protein before the workout. The carbohydrates will give you energy to sustain you through the high intensity open workouts. Applesauce mixed with protein powder is a good option for before a workout.
After your workout, you want to recovery quickly, so here is where it is important to consume protein and carbohydrates within a 30-minute window. It is important to replace glycogen stores for proper recovery. Many athletes find shakes to be the go-to in this situation. I love my SFH protein and keep in with me in my gym bag. Make sure that you mix your protein with a source of carbohydrate. One of our favorite options is whey protein mixed with coconut water. Whey protein is the gold standard for building lean muscle mass.
As you can see, there really isn’t a nutrition “secret” to doing well during the open. Keep your routine consistent, log your food, and stick to meal prepping. Don’t let yourself get side tracked by the glitz and glam of bottles labeled “energy” and “performance.”
Finally, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. We know that dehydration can decrease performance up to 20 percent. Come to the gym hydrated before your workout. Make sure you hydrate after your workout as well.
If you follow these simple tips, you will ensure that you are fueling for performance!
Good luck in the open this year and of course, HAVE FUN!
